about
The song started as a farewell letter to the late great John Prine in April of 2020. In the days after his death, and in heavy pandemic lockdown, I was taking out the trash between our place and the next, a narrow and cluttered alleyway. Returning to my place, I paused, a gentle snow falling, somewhat uncharacteristically for April, and took a moment to look around. A blackbird was perched in the naked bumbleberry tree, and a neighbor, shirtless and smoking, was shouting down from his fire escape, I can’t remember what, but it was a check-in of sorts, back when we were all still looking out for one another.
With this on my mind, I returned to my farewell letter to John Prine -- which really transformed into a song about overcoming hardships and finding a soft landing place, for all of us, wherever that might be. While writing this song, I thought of Prine’s song, “Paradise”, and the banks of the Green River he so fondly remembers from childhood (before the Coal Mining company came), and I thought of the blackbirds he sings about in “Everything is Cool”. I tried to pay respect to both of those images.
lyrics
For a year of great hope and great expectations
The bottom came fast and hard and replaced it
With a look deep within our own convictions
If it’s ever over will we even believe it
we shout across the alleyways, down from the fire escapes
To neighbors so distant in our own private prisons
May Your golden torch flicker bove’ the Rochester Dam
May you find Paradise in wherever you land
Now I see your blackbirds they fill up the sky
The wind through the willows it fades into night
Soft snowflakes in April slow down the time
The old world has left us alone but in spite we’ll still…
shout across the alleyways, down from the fire escapes
To neighbors so distant in our own private prisons
May Your golden torch flicker bove’ the Rochester Dam
May you find Paradise in wherever you land
